Who Participates in a Home Paternity Test A home paternity test follows the same steps that are done with a paternity test that is performed in a paternity testing facility or clinic. DNA samples are collected from all subjects-the father, the mother, and the child in question-and these samples are then shipped to the clinic that does the testing for them. While this is indeed called a home test, the proof of paternity has to be proven through a series of laboratory examinations of the DNA samples to help determine the truth. This home paternity test that has subjects taking DNA from themselves and shipping these samples to the paternity clinic lab for verification has proven to be very accurate and has given lots of fathers the peace of mind that they want and need. The inclusion of the mother in these tests is not really as necessary as the other two subjects; however, it does help the lab come up with results faster. For paternity tests done at home without a mother present for DNA samples, more laboratory tests have to be done to prove paternity. How DNA Is Collected Also called a DNA collecting kit, the home paternity testing kits are often sent to the users from laboratories. They would usually contain three sterilized swabs for DNA collecting. This DNA is then shipped back to the lab after placed in sterile holding envelopes to help keep contamination of the samples at a minimum. Tests are then exacted from these DNA samples. While some people believe that blood typing can prove paternity, DNA testing is by far the most conclusive of all paternity tests around. The free DNA collecting kit that the family receives comes with instructions on how the subjects should collect samples and how to keep them clean and uncontaminated for accurate testing. The swabs that come with the kit are to be used to scrape the inside of the cheeks of all three subjects, and these swabs are to be placed inside the accompanying envelopes for shipping to the lab. The DNA is then extracted from the skin cells that are on these swabs, and comparisons and tests are made to then prove paternity from these DNA. Paternity Clinics A lot of these home paternity tests are called as such because part of the process is done at home. The real testing, however, is actually done in paternity clinics that provide the people who need these answers about parenthood.
